Top 10 Fallacies of Western Union

Please note that ALL THE FOLLOWING are FALSE and UNTRUE of Western Union:

1. Western Union is a bank.
2. Western Union is a money-changer.
3. Western Union keeps members' (customers') passport/ID details in W.U. members' cards.
4. Western Union scans/stores customers' signatures electronically and therefore can verify if a signature is yours.
5. Western Union can send money anywhere.
6. Western Union is not opened on Chinese New Year in Singapore.
7. Western Union does not charge any "extras" for usage of NETS.
8. Western Union's "direct-to-bank" for receiving money in Indonesia and Phillipines is instant.
9. Western Union requires the full residential address of the monies sent.
10. Western Union operates like the Singapore Post.

HERE ARE THE TRUTHS!

As long as a money-receiver (recipient) is able to provide
#1. a government ID (eg. passport) that verifies his/her identity,
#2. the full name of sender and where money (country from where money is being sent) is coming from
#3. the amount expected and
#4 the 10-digit MTCN number (not unlike a PIN)

the recepient named by the sender will be paid.

This is of course, only if the Western Union agent/staff is able to differentiate between a fake government ID from a genuine document.

Western Union can send money anywhere except to Myanmar where it is has not established any offices there yet. And also due to governmental restrictions, India disallows money of any sort to be sent to Singapore through Western Union branches/agents.

Western Union observes STRICT governmental rules (eg. no photocopies of passport accepted) whereas the Singapore Post is more "lax".

Western Union's "direct-to-bank" service requires 5 to 7 days for receipient to receive money (might as well get the 'person-to-person' service, do a lil leg-walk and get your money faster!)

The reason why IDs or passports are a compulsory document to provide to WEstern Union is thevery fact that confidential info from passports and such are NOT stored on Western Union members' cards. (Only recepients' names and countries are stored on members' cards.)

Perhaps the most important thing is to never send money to people you don't know or have never met before, no matter what kind of remittance service you use.
